Today is the day that Deathless shows up on bookshelves en masse, waving its stark and terrible banners while dressed in enough opulent finery to make a miser weep. Deathless is the latest novel from Catherynne M. Valente, and it is a marvel to behold: at its most basic, it is a retelling of Koschei the Deathless and Marya Morevna set in Stalinist Russia. But, truly (as with all the best things), it is so much more than that.
